Performer, teaching, composer and author, Matthew Quilliam is a fresh new talent on the ukulele, already making a huge impression.
Matthew’s primary instrument has always been the ukulele which has allowed him to grow a life-long connection and expertise with the instrument. Over his short musical career so far, he has already achieved so much with no signs of slowing down.
Versatility is in abundance when it comes to Matthew’s performance capabilities. He is best known for his popular musical comedy show which puts him in high demand at many festivals in the UK. He also performs in classical, Hawaiian and jazz styles, which he also presents to captivated audiences at concerts.
He took on his first private pupil in 2017, building a first-class reputation for clarity and quality ever since. He now teaches many private pupils of all ages and in several educational establishments. On YouTube, you can find Matthew’s in-depth series of ukulele tuition videos covering many advanced topics relating to music and the ukulele.
The ukulele is in dire need of new compositions. Matthew has a keen interest in composing and performing original ukulele music with an upcoming debut album of his own due out later in the year. The album will features experimental pieces, covering new ground for the ukulele such as the use of piano accompaniment, electronics and dice!
The current history of the ukulele is a fascinating, yet undocumented, topic which Matthew is currently writing an academic paper on. His ground-breaking research will be published later this year which will lead the way to much discussion and debate.
Currently studying music at Chichester Conservatoire, Matthew has performed alongside or opening for some big acts such as John Otway, Jools Holland, Pete Lincoln, Peter Moss and more.
He has also had the opportunity to play at large gigs such as WEYFEST 2017, Shrewkfest 2018/19, Isle of Wight Ukulele Festival 2016/18 and on tour across the UK and in USA, Germany and Poland.
Matthew has been fortunate enough to have participated in a recording session in Abbey Road Studios and to have sung in concerts in Guildford and ChichesterCatherdrals and at Swindon Oktoberfest to over 2000 people.
Media and publications that have featured Matthew include BBC Radio West Sussex, UKE Magazine and Paul Mansell’s The Ukulele Sessions.
Matthew is a multi-award winner; he recently become GSMC Best Solo Male Act (1st place 2020, 2nd place 2019) as well as winning multiple local talents shows like Berkshire’s Got Talent and Farnborough’s Got Talent throughout the years.
The musicians Matthew performs with are hand-picked professionals with credits such as performances with the HYO in the Royal Albert Hall or are currently studying at Trinity Laban, Royal Academy of Music or Oxford University.
